Euro-Med Cooperation … A strategic Partnership

• Ambassador Nabila Makram, Minister of Immigration and Egyptian Expatriates, and Dr. Khaled El Anani, Minister of Antiquities, are taking part in the Euro-Mediterranean Cooperation Session.
• Ambassador Nasser Kamel, Secretary-General of the Union for the Mediterranean: Egypt is one of the largest Mediterranean countries and the most influential.
The meeting was attended by Ambassador Nabila Makram, Minister of Immigration and Egyptian Expatriates and Dr. Khaled Al Anani, Minister of Antiquities. The meeting aimed at finding partnerships, avoiding disagreements and discussing concerns and discussing the challenges of 43 countries of the Euro-Mediterranean countries.

At the beginning of the session, a short film was presented focusing on the importance of activating the relations between the North and Southern Mediterranean countries as well as the importance of trade in natural gas in the Mediterranean between Egypt and Europe to achieve common prosperity.

Secretary-General of the Union for the Mediterranean, Ambassador Nasser Kamel, said that Egypt was one of the largest and most influential Mediterranean countries, stressing on the importance of a Mediterranean Free Trade Area and political practice through a developmental perspective this could be achieved by combating extremism and violence, eliminating unemployment, developing the infra-structure, and solving the water problems, pointing out to the importance of the intellectual dimension in the fight against terrorist thought and the role of women in it.

"The last ten years have been difficult in the history of Greece, but they had the strength to get out of the crisis," Secretary General of the Greek Ministry of Education, pointing out that the Egyptian-Greek Alliance is an example of a successful alliance that helps solving economic problems among the youth of the three countries, which will create stability for Europe in general, and the Mediterranean countries in particular.

Ambassador Ivan Surkos, Head of the European Union delegation to Egypt, expressed his full condolences to the victims and the Egyptian government regarding the Minya terrorist incident, stressing that Europe stands with Egypt in the fight against terrorism and extremism. He pointed out that a lot of things could be achieved through cooperation between North and Southern Mediterranean countries. He also stressed on the importance of the political aspect in the partnership which could be achieved through the holding of strategic dialogues between the parties, stressing that the United Nations is making efforts to find peaceful solutions in Libya.

Dr. Samir Anouti, the United Nations expert on Development, noted that to activate any partnership, it is necessary to invest in youth and realism. This is confirmed by UN Security Council Resolution 2250 on youth, peace and security, which the Arab region starting with Egypt began carrying it out.

Dr. Adel Al-Adawi, Executive Director of the Egyptian World Economic Forum, said that there is no partnership between the EU and the Union for the Mediterranean, but there is cooperation that does not reach strategic level. He recommended holding two summits between the Mediterranean countries, one in the north and the other in the south, and to enhance cooperation among them, stressing on the importance of building confidence between the countries of the south and the Mediterranean to combat terrorism.
